If you want to be Walmart, by all means seek venture funding: you’ll need lots of it to stand a chance at succeeding. If, on the other hand, you want to build a company guaranteed to preserve your values, fund it yourself and maintain control. You’ll own something to be truly proud of while helping to scare the crap out of venture capitalists.

Venture Capital's biggest fear

There is definitely an undercurrent of this cultural sentiment across the board, and not just in the startup & tech world... I think more and more people want to build, maintain and enjoy the things they've created - Not just sell out and live on a beach in the Caribbean. That 'grass is greener on the other side / sellout millionaire' mentality is slowly on the way out. We're all getting a little more zen. Mark my words.
